JCLO Assists with Packing of Relief Supplies at Jamaican Embassy in Washington, D.C., Following Hurricane Melissa

The Jamaica Central Labour Organisation (JCLO) joined members of the Embassy of Jamaican in Washington, D.C. and Jamaicans from the diaspora to assist with the packing of relief supplies bound for Jamaica in the aftermath of Hurricane Melissa. The coordinated effort, led by the Embassy formed part of a nationwide and overseas mobilisation to support families and communities hardest hit by the hurricane.

Inside the multipurpose hall, the atmosphere was one of purpose and solidarity. Volunteers and staff worked methodically to sort, label, and prepare hundreds of boxes filled with non-perishable food items, toiletries, tarpaulins, blankets, and medical supplies. The initiative was organised in collaboration with the Jamaican Liaison Service (JLS) and other partners across North America, underscoring the strength of Jamaica’s global network of support.

When asked why she chose to join the effort personally, Mrs. Roberts Risden explained that leadership in times of crisis must go beyond direction—it must demonstrate presence. “This is not just about coordination; it’s about connection,” she said. “If our people are hurting, we must show up, roll up our sleeves, and help to ease the burden. Every box packed here represents hope for a family or community back home.”

Mrs. Roberts Risden also issued a call for continued support from Jamaicans and friends of Jamaica across the diaspora. She encouraged individuals, organisations, and employers within the overseas employment network to contribute supplies or make financial donations to sustain the relief drive. “Recovery doesn’t end with the first shipment,” she noted. “We’re inviting everyone, wherever you are, to be part of rebuilding lives and restoring dignity to those affected.”

Roberts Risden also reported that similar to Canada many of our employers in the United States are helping their workers.  Some have given to workers directly, while others have donated to the National Disaster Relief Fund.  We are also working with a group of employers in New York who are looking to donate items for our agricultural sector.

The supplies will be shipped to Jamaica for distribution through the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM), targeting the parishes most affected by flooding and infrastructure damage.

The JCLO’s involvement in this initiative reflects its enduring commitment to the welfare of Jamaican workers and their families, ensuring that those who serve overseas continue to play a meaningful role in national recovery efforts.
